Dear <%NAME%>, how've you been for the past month?
I wanted to take an
interesting turn this month and talk about a topic I think you're going to find
interesting.
Slavery for 200 years
In just a few of days Jewish people all over the world
will be celebrating the festivity of Passover. I believe most if not all
know a little bit about the story. Jews were enslaved for over 200 years
in Egypt and were finally let go by the great Pharaoh. The Jews could not
prepare enough food for themselves to bring with them to the desert, so
they had to rush baking and preparing causing their bread not to rise.
Therefore they ate
and continue eating unleavened bread for a week each Passover holiday. Personally, I'm
not so crazy about Matza (unleavened bread) but the the philosophy that is tied to why the
Jewish nation rids itself of leavened products throughout Passover is a lesson that we can all learn.
Leavened and the EGO
Growing up and listening to the Passover story
always made me wonder why the importance on the unleavened bread. I later
learned leaven
can be compared to the Ego because like bread or any leavened product the Ego inflates. What is the Ego? There are many different angles to
understanding the ego. One of them is that the ego is an internal
mental program that works at keeping and affirming our identity. Our identity is based on
previous life experiences and beliefs.
As we go through life, we develop
beliefs that serve us or ones that don't serve us but we still believe them
because the ego continues to safeguard them. Why does the ego safe guard
our beliefs? Because it is scared that if we let our beliefs go...we lose
our identity and if we do that, the ego dies. Death is the biggest fear
the ego has and it's motive to fight and strive to keep itself and our beliefs
intact. This is why most people are scared of change especially major
change. It is an unconscious illusion of death for the nervous ego and the
fear of change can even be a change for the better. Many of us have been
in situations where the change that we wanted to make for a long time finally
came to fruition and even though we knew it was positive, we had some anxiety
about it mixed with excitement. This is the ego's fear of change and who
you are about to become.
Many people all over the world are striving
for change but don't because their ego gets comfortable with who the person has
become. The person may be struggling or unhappy, but at least they know or
are familiar with the mess they are in. To know something else would mean
change and death to the "old me."
The ego even keeps arguments going. It
will fight with another ego to prove it's point because it is strengthening it's
point of view and its belief. Keeping ridiculous egoic arguments
eventually destroy friendships and marriages.
Recognize your ego
Awareness is such a key factor in the release
of or reshaping of ego. Ego is not a bad thing, it is not evil although I
am sure that some may not agree. It is a program that has a function just
like all of the mental, emotional or psychological programs that we have.
You can allow it to do its function, but be vigilant of where it takes
you. If you want a change in your life and are not moving forward, know
that the ego is scared of who you may become even if you are to become very
successful. If you are in a heated argument that goes no where and you
feel that the argument is not worth fighting but can't seem to stop, recognize
that one of the functions of the ego is to not lose. By the way not to
lose (for the ego) is more important than winning. This is because when
the ego wins, it has nothing else to fight for. The mind and ego look for
situations in life where they can be active and stay alive. This
"aliveness" comes with day to day problems in life. The more
problems, the more their is to solve, the more their is to solve, the longer the
ego can live.
Release egoic
tendencies
One of the things the ego does
not like is to be let go of. The ego does not like relaxation, inactivity
(which doesn't mean do nothing all day) or letting go. Many people feel
great when they enter deep states of hypnosis or meditation because they are
taming their ego. They let go of excessive thinking and what is left is a
tranquility and peace that does not entertain problems in life. Yet others
reach for drugs and alcohol. Either one will suppress the ego and cause a
temporary loss of identity making the person feel free. Interesting isn't
it? The ego likes to be in charge and this feels good. Yet,
when we feel good through letting go of the ego, we feel even better. Now
I'm not suggesting that you experiment with drugs or alcohol, but do experiment
with letting go, meditation, hypnosis or releasing. Last month I wrote
about a technique called releasing. This is an excellent way to release
egoic tendencies along with negative emotion because you are becoming more
relaxed about emotional upsets and letting them go. Taming the ego does
not occur overnight but with practice and training of the mind as to how it's
going to react in ego driven circumstances it comes to a point where control
over the ego becomes natural. The more you practice, the more of an expert
you become.
I wish a Happy Passover to those that are celebrating and success in taming ego
to all.
