Dear <%NAME%>,
School is out and the kids are already
beginning to utter those horrifying words.......I'm bored! Remember when
you were younger and used to get bored? We don't really have time to get
bored now do we. If you're not busy running around with stuff to do...then
the time you could spend being bored you may spend trying to catch up on some
z's.
Dare to Bore
I've mentioned this in the past, I believe
that improvisational theater is a spiritual practice; that's one of the reasons
I'm so passionate about it. One of the concepts of improv is called
"dare to bore." What this basically means is that when you are
in a scene, don't worry about rushing through it. Take your time.
Improv only uses space props. In other words, there is no cell phone, cup
of coffee to sip or pencil and paper to write with...it's done in space and with
space. You act as if you have an object in your hand, handle them as if you
feel their weight and in your mind, you make it as real as if you are holding a
designated object. If you are making a space sandwich, it's going to take
a little time. You have to twist the tie off the bread bag, reach into the
bag, pull out bread, pull the mayo out of the "space fridge"
etc. If you do this rushed....you'll never convince an audience that
you are holding any of these objects. So things must slow down even if it
means that you are going to bore your audience. The truth is that taking
this approach doesn't really bore the audience at all, it actually satisfies
them. Last week I was painting walls and found myself paying particular
attention to small detail. All of a sudden time seemed to stop.
Cares of the world melted away and I actually found myself enjoying what I was
doing. Instead of being bored, I was happy to be in the moment and paying
attention to the detail of painting. Paying this attention is free and it
helps slow life down. Daring to be bored or daring to bore is about
patience. Do we have to rush through what we are doing to get to the next
thing, or can we slow down and be ok with what's going on right now?
Enjoy The Process
In the past, I never would have enjoyed things
that were a means to and end like painting a wall to make the room look more
beautiful or building a cabinet. The process just seemed so long, tedious,
time consuming and boring. Until one fine day I was putting together a
surround sound system I had just bought. I was so excited because besides
this being a guy thing, listening to music or movies in surround sound would be
really cool at home. I was connecting wires and threading them through
plastic tubing-like material in the ceiling so that they wouldn't be
visible. I was rushing on opening the packages and twisting wires
together when I realized how much I was rushing. "What's the
rush" I asked myself? "Well I'm hurrying up listen to this
surround sound." Myself replied. Then I paused and thought to
myself "couldn't I just once slow down and really enjoy the process of
doing something instead of rushing through it? After all, the process is
where the learning is...isn't it? We learn to ride a bike by
falling. Well we learn that falling is not what you are supposed to do and
we also learn how not to fall with falling. Thus the process of falling and wobbling gets us to the most satisfying
part. YES! The rush when you finally take off and ride, what a rush
that is! It's this process that we many times fail to enjoy when we are
trying to get to our goal. So I came up with a phrase that gets me back
into slowing down and enjoying what I'm doing if I find myself rushed.
"Enjoy the Process Israel." So I slowed down putting
together that surround sound and found that the putting together of the wires
etc. was kind of fun when I wasn't rushing to finish.
"Click"
That's a phenomenal movie. If you've
seen it you know what I mean. If you haven't....get it, rent it borrow it
and you will see what I'm talking about. If you haven't seen it...what
happens in the end is.......... ( I won't spoil it for you). Nevertheless,
the movie click was about enjoying the process. Adam Sandlers' life kept
moving forward because he wanted to miss all of the difficult parts.
Unfortunately he missed more than just the hard parts in life, he also missed a
whole learning process. Do we do that too? Do we miss a learning
process with our children, our friends work, our career or with things that are occurring
in life which we prefer to skip? We've all had our fair share (or maybe
not so fair share) of difficult things in life but what we learn from them (if
we have an open mind about learning from them) can be priceless. I don't
wish difficulty to any of you, but I do wish you to learn and grow from all of
your experiences.
Speak to you again next month.
